Version 6.0 borrows a few great features from other podcast apps, like automatic silence-trimming and voice-boosting. It has all the fiddly bits podcastheads will love, like chapter markers, show notes, a running queue for uninterrupted listening, and support for 3D Touch. For everyone else, it’s just a super-simple grid of show icons. There are still a couple of small things missing, like Overcast’s awesome ability to download a single episode without subscribing to an entire show, but Pocket Casts has just about everything you could want.
Also keep in mind the wireless the box offers. Streaming video over WiFi can be challenging at times even with good equipment. Running a wired Ethernet cable is always best but sometimes not feasible. If you do need to use WiFi be sure to read how well it streams video content over a wireless setup.

“We are also in discussions with additional e-book providers,” says Moon. “Unfortunately we can’t disclose the parties at present for confidentiality purposes. As a result, our e-book sources and supported formats (including EPUB) will expand substantially after launch.”
Hi Tim! Thank you for taking the time and putting in the effort to make such a great place for folks like me that are just learning about the Android TV boxes. I just canceled my DirecTV service. I had a 3TB external harddrive hooked up to my DirecTV receiver to store all my recorded shows on. I know I can’t watch the shows I recorded as they are encoded by DirecTV but can I hook up my 3TB harddrive up to one of these boxes as long as it has a USB port and record shows to my harddrive? What other equipment or apps would I need to install in order to do this?
Sounds like you have an Android box Cindy. Simply search the Google Play store for the Global, CBC, and CTV apps. You won’t be able to get all Canadian stations that way, but most of the popular ones have apps.
Recently, Hulu has been pushing their paid subscription service that costs $7.99 USD per month that gives you access to more shows and entire seasons instead of just the most recent episodes. If you want to keep it free, make sure you look for the small checkboxes marked “free” when you are browsing their content. This will make sure you are only shown shows and videos that you can stream for free – of which there is plenty.

Broadcasting rights vary from country to country and even within provinces of countries. These rights govern the distribution of copyrighted content and media and allow the sole distribution of that content at any one time. An example of content only being aired in certain countries is BBC iPlayer. The BBC checks a user’s IP address to make sure that only users located in the UK can stream content from the BBC. The BBC only allows free use of their product for users within the UK as those users have paid for a television license that funds part of the BBC. This IP address check is not foolproof as the user may be accessing the BBC website through a VPN or proxy server. Broadcasting rights can also be restricted to allowing a broadcaster rights to distribute that content for a limited time. Channel 4’s online service All 4 can only stream shows created in the US by companies such as HBO for thirty days after they are aired on one of the Channel 4 group channels. This is to boost DVD sales for the companies who produce that media.
It’s much more common now – but in case you still don’t have one you can pick up an HDMI cable almost anywhere. They even sell them at Dollarama for around $3 each. Here’s a well-reviewed cable from Amazon for $5 with free shipping.
But if you’re the type of person that loves having the option to install whatever you want and tweak your system to really make it yours, then you’re just the person who should get an Android TV box. Thanks for the update Steve – Netflix USA is pretty much dead for everyone now unfortunately. They really worked hard to make sure people can’t region hop on their service anymore. I think internally they are region neutral, but the content creators themselves are pressuring them to prevent it. I’m all for paying the content creators – but I think these crazy border laws are silly and archaic.
Hi, if I connect an android TV box to a projector with HDMI cable, will the TV box still stream audio through WIFI at the same time? So I can see a movie on my projector and hear the audio on my speakers.
Look into paid subscription services. Some of the viewing options on your new box or stick will require either a paid subscription or a payment per episode (or movie). Research each streaming box or stick to find out which services it supports.
The Display Settings consists of features such as Auto Detect Resolution, Ultra High Definition as well as 4K Video output support. You are also allowed to hide or show the status bar, adjust the display and also your screensaver.
It hardly keeps a stable connection between a Samsung S7 Edge and an Nvidia Shield TV 2017 through Bluetooth. If I leave the phone locked, I have to either restart this app or turn the Bluetooth on and off. The keyboard typing also lags between the phone and the Shield. It would be easier to set up a connection if we could manually input the IP address of the device we want to connect with this app.
Before 2006, most services used peer-to-peer (P2P) networking, in which users downloaded an application and data would be shared between the users rather than the service provider giving the now more commonly used streaming method. Now most service providers have moved away from the P2P systems and are now using the streaming media. The old P2P service was selected because the existing infrastructure could not handle the bandwidth necessary for centralized streaming distribution. Some consumers didn’t like their upload bandwidth being consumed by their video player, which partially motivated the roll-out of centralized streaming distribution.
If you have unpredictable tastes but focus on only one show at a time, it might make the most sense to buy your television à la carte. For the amount you’d save by switching from cable to just Internet service (about $900 a year), you can pick up 30 seasons of TV for $30 each. Assuming these are all 45-minute shows with 22 episodes, that’s almost 500 hours of content. If you can’t imagine yourself ever watching more than that, then this plan is for you. (Don’t forget to grab a TV antenna for major live events like the Oscars and the Super Bowl, or if you just want the option of kicking back and watching primetime now and then.)
There are a number of interent TV boxes available, from the likes of Apple, Sky and Roku, but the technology is relatively new. At the moment, most internet TV boxes perform just the one function, meaning that you will still need a separate means of accessing digital TV, such as a pay-TV or free-TV personal video recorder.
Elsewhere’s not trying to be VR the way Google or Oculus want to be VR. Li and Raskin call the headset a “project,” not a startup, and tell a long story about wanting to create a different way of seeing the world. For $50, it takes all the content you already have, and makes it feel richer and deeper. In that sense, it’s almost like a View-Master for the iPhone age. It’s fun, and that’s all it’s meant to be.

Another limitation of the Recommendations shelf is that there’s no way of setting up different home screens for different members of your household. To be fair, delivering such personalised menu systems raises numerous problems when you’re talking about a screen that’s used by the whole family. But if you’re going to raise expectations of a tailored, bespoke experience, you also raise awareness of any limitations that bespoke experience may then suffer.
